Construction complete! Test Environment.

Construction | Day 5


Today was the day to put the finishing touches in/on the booth. I began by cutting the carpet I'd acquired from work down to size.
As soon as the carpet was down I made my way over to the fashion rooms to begin making my curtain. 5 minutes induction took me back to my textiles days at secondary school and within half an hour the curtain was ready to be fitted.

And finally it was time to add the light fitting. I screwed a hook into the booth's ceiling then ran the cable neatly around the edge of the room to the power source above. All that was missing now was the Tobii T60.

Construction | Day 4


Work began today with clamping the boards back together in the graphics studio before screwing the unit together. Once complete I started to paint the inside of the booth white to maximize light levels, hence making the eye trackers job slightly easier.

With the paint inside the room still wet I began making a shelf from an off cut. A few coats of white paint in this afternoons sun and it was ready to be fixed to the room via the exterior walls. Finishing touches tomorrow!

Construction | Day 3


Luckily the boards had dried when I to the returned this morning. I moved the wood over to the workshop and began to clap the boards together. Not the easiest job for a first timer with no assistance. However, once together I drilled the pilot holes into the wood in order to make screwing the unit together much easier and neater.

Once all of the holes were drilled the clamps were removed and I had to transport the boards over to the graphic's studio, the home of the test environment. A large concrete pillar outside the room prevented me from fixing the whole booth together in the workshop and moving it over as one complete unit. Once the boards had been relocated it was then a case of fixing it all together. Tomorrows job.

Construction | Day 2


Today the 4 sheets of 4x8 12mm MDF arrived at the arts Institute from near by columbia timbers. After some hassling the workshop technician finnaly cut the boards to the correct size.


Once cut I began painting the boards white outside however I was against the clock as getting the wood cut to size took longer than expected. The boards received 3 coats of white emulsion and have been left to dry overnight.

Construction | Day 1



Before beginning the construction I have purchased from B&Q fixtures and fittings. These included screws, hooks, a light fitting and a curtain rail. I also wanted 8x4 sheets of either 9mm or 12mm MDF, however getting them into the car would have been impossible. Therefor I need to contact a local woodyard and arrange a delivery of the board.

In order to conduct my eye tracking experiments using the T120 Tobii eye tracker a secluded test environment will beecreated from the follow plans:




The design has been simplified in order to reduce both construct cost, and time.

EMP: FINAL CONCEPT

Here is the final concept/target for the EMP:


Create a study that both informs the reader of the commercial & scientific uses of eye tracking, as well as the history of the research tool and highlight potential creative uses of eye tracking within a graphic design parameter. Intersperse the study with ‘Creative case studies’, these are the results of my eye tracking experiments that will be reinterpreted into personally generated graphic visuals.

EMP Issue and possible re-direction.

The main issue so far that I am experiencing with the constant changing theme of my EMP is grounding a single solid approach. I feel I have a range of smaller ideas that are interesting but nothing enough to form a single solid theme.

With this issue in mind I am proposing the idea of using the eye tracking equipment to perform a series of experiments on myself in order to create a piece of work that is a combination of scientific/experimental info graphics/self promotion areas.

My sight (temporary name eye sight pun) is a collection of experiments that highlight the way I see things. A series of varying experiments will be conducted that will record the relationship between myself and selected stimuli in order to produce a set of graphic outcomes.

As regards format, at this stage Stefan Stagmeister ‘things I have learned so far in my life’ is inspirational in the sense the reader gets to open a box of smaller publications and navigate their own way through various graphic experiments.

Test Environment: Re-design


The initial environment design seen previously did not take into consideration the fact that the eye tracking equipment works most efficiently when the user is 60cm away from the equipment. With this taken into consideration the following proposed environment has been created.

The interior will be basic to avoid distraction and save on production time. It will be home to large display screen as well as a chair for the user. The space must contain lighting in order for eye tracking equipment to work successfully.

Tobii T60 & Acuity ETS: Success!

Great news, a deal has been reached with the guys at Acuity ETS Ltd for the use of a T60 for 5 Days (22nd-25th. This will make a huge difference to my project and will also require the construction of my test environment to begin very soon.

Negotiating with Tobii



I am currently in the process of Negotiating the use of a Tobii T120 eye tracker from the guys at Acuity ETS Ltd, they are the UK Tobii Eye Tracking representatives. Fingers crossed I managed to obtain the equipment as the quality of my study would benefit hugely.

New approach: The eye as a creative tool



Eye tracking equipment has the ability to record the physical eye movements of a human being. With this taken into consideration, one approach could involve asking each volunteer to use their imagination and eyes to draw.

With the pupil taking on the roll of the pencil, how well can we use our eye in conjunction with our imagination, to create image?

The outcomes not only illustrate the possibility of using the eye as a creative tool. But also highlights the way individuals picture objects in their minds.



Following this using the eye tracking equipment an experiment could be conducted that investigates the way in which we see letter forms.

By displaying each individual character of a given typeface at a large scale and recording human eye scanning response a new typeface could be developed.

05.03.09 Post tutorial Summary: Revised approach

After a tutorial based discussion regarding how to direct my efforts concerning the recording of eye movement the following decisions have been made.

There are various different organizations that exist that use eye tracking equipment to make design decisions relating to how consumers make choices. As a student I will be achieving similar results to these companies only on a smaller scale.

The decision has been made to move away from this field of study. Instead the project will look more towards more creative and original areas of exploration. I will therefore continue to study the eye and visual pathways. I intend to explore more creative and original approaches to recording human eye movement in order to establish a more unique and adventurous outcomes and final pieces.

Advertising Eye Tracking Test Concept 2.

Many news publications and magazines feature multiple adverts from the same campaign. Sometimes these advertisements are exactly the same as the one featured only a few pages previous.

The aim of this experiment is to see how the eye interacts with repetitive advertising.

A series of volunteers could be exposed to a series of 5 different advertising campaigns in sequence. The process would then instantly be repeated 5 times.

Each time the ad is viewed the users eye movements will be recorded in under to further understand how the eye perceives repeat advertising.

The experiment would mimic reading a news publication with repeat advertising or watching the same commercial more than once (a common occurrence).

Advertising Eye Tracking Concept 1.

Eye tracking could be used to define examples of print based advertising that appear more memorable to users than others. For example. A series of different advertisements could be created by myself that advertise the same product. Each ad could be subject to a varying:

Layout, or text to image ratio, or varying text size, or varying image size, or different copy length, or varying positioning of ad components etc.

A volunteer would sit and view a small number of examples. Their eye movements would be tracked by eye tracking equipment.

One by one they would then be asked to re create each ad they saw using either by sketch or by the positioning of tactile elements.

The results for each person would include a series of visual scan paths for each ad as well as a personal re recreation of each example exposed to. This experiment would highlight the relationship between eye movement and memory in order to find the most efficient/effective layout for memorable advertising.

Here is how the results could appear, in this experiment an ad has been created featuring the same content each time, however the layout and scale of the elements varies:

Creating Test Enviroment: First 3d models

In order to construct the experiment an indoor space will be constructed by myself.
The purpose of the space is to house all of the necessary technical equipment as well as provide seclusion from surrounding distractions. Here are some early 3D visual possibilities.



25.02.09 Project Summary: Proposed plan

In order to conduct the experiment a booth will be created indoors that will home all the required equipment. This will also be the environment in which the experiment will be conducted.

A selection of 30 volunteers (expandable) across a range of ages, sex’s and cultural backgrounds will participate in the experiment. Each volunteer will enter the constructed booth. They will take a seat in front of the monitor and eye tracking equipment. A series of selected print based advertisements for a range of products and services will appear on the screen. The volunteer will then observe each advert as they would usually. The eye tracking equipment will be recording the scan paths of the volunteers for each example of print based advertising.

When the process is complete the results will be then tabulated. These results will be the basis of the project and will allow the design of exiting visuals in a graphical format. The final outcome could take the form of either a series of books, and/or prints and/or a website, in order to be submitted for the Extended Major Project.

The Eye: Fixations and Saccades



Reading along with speech is the most common form of communication known to man kind.

The human interprets text based reading by a series of fixations and saccades. Fixation is the action of concentrating the eyes directly on a subject and a saccade can be defined as rapid movement of the eye between fixation points. A series of fixations and sacades are otherwise known as ‘scan paths’.

The eye absorbs the majority of necessary information during the fixation process not a saccade. The central point of fixation is key in absorbing information with only a miniscule amount of information being interpreted using the peripheral vision.

Eye Tracking History Summary

Eye tracking can be traced back to the 1800’s. At this early stage no technical equipment was used to track eye movement other than human observation.

In 1897 Louis Emile Javal’s eye tracking experiments concluded that humans do not read in smooth sweeping movements. However, the eye performs a series of short pauses and motions, this motion is known as a saccaded.

This development lead to further experimentation throughout the 1900’s regarding areas such as Why do our eyes stop? On which words to they pause? For what periods of time to we pause for? Etc. Technological advancements in the field led to Edmun Huey creating a primitive eye tracker that was a form of aluminium contact lens that enabled easier study of eye movement.

The technology progressed heavily by the 1950’s when American Guy Tomas Buswell projected beams of light onto the eye that were then recorded onto film in order to assist with the recording of eye movements.

A decade later Albert L. Yarbus published some of the most highly regarded work ever conducted in the filed. His 1967 book discussed the relationship between task and eye movement and also the relationship between fixation and interest.



Today eye tracking experiments are usually recorded by means of digital video based equipment. Often a camera focuses on either or both of the eyes and records the motion of the pupil and surround eye whilst the users views an object or other stimulus. Contrast is used to detect the center of the human eye where infrared light produces a reflection from the eyes corneal. Modern day eye tracking equipment is usually mounted to the subjects head, or is focused on the users eyes and held at a fixed point. In order to capture the most rapid eye movements possible video equipment is needed that can operate at 1000-1250Hz, in comparison a standard definition television runs at 60 or 100hz.
